Past simple I

 

Use the Simple Past to express the idea that an action started and finished at a specific time in the past.

Irregular Verbs

Afirmative

Subject + verb (+ed)

  • Played basketball yesterday.
  • She studied hard last week.
  • He cried a lot two hours ago..

 

Negative

Subject + did not / didn't + Verb

  • The concert didn't end at 11 o'clock.
  • He didn't want a wine.
  • They didn't arrive early.

 

Interrogative

Did + Subject + Verb?

  • Did he play football?
  • Did your cousin come last Tuesday?
  • Did he phone you?

 

Short answer

Yes, I did. No, I didn't

Did you call the police? No, I didn't.

NOTES:

Regular verbs: play, study, cry, arrive, want...

Irregular verbs: speak, drive, run, see...

You can use the past simple with these past time expressions: this morning, yesterday, last night, last week, last month, last year...
